6 outdoor events and activities to enjoy in Beds, Bucks, and Herts this August

The summer holidays have, at long last, arrived.

While your children or grandchildren are undoubtedly excited, keeping them entertained for six long weeks is no easy feat.

With pleasant weather on the horizon, we’ve handpicked a selection of outdoor events taking place in the Beds, Bucks, and Herts regions this August for you and your family to enjoy together.

Bedfordshire – Twinwood Festival (28 – 31 August)

Touted as the “ultimate vintage festival for music and dance”, the Twinwood Festival is held every August bank holiday at the Twinwood Farm Airfield in Clapham, Bedfordshire.

The eclectic musical line-up features a diverse array of talent from:

• Northern Soul DJs
• Jazz collectives
• Swing bands
• Disco

And there’s plenty to do, including shopping, camping, and visiting museums. What’s more, attendees get into the spirit of the festival by dressing up in vintage fashion and period clothing, each vying for the coveted “Mr and Mrs Vintage” crowns. This year, maybe it will be a member of your family who takes home the glory.

Buckinghamshire – “Summer of Play” at Waddesdon Manor (22 July – 31 August)

Waddesdon Manor, a stunning French Renaissance-style château, is hosting the “Summer of Play” from July to August.

Every week is dedicated to something new for your children to enjoy:

• Get active week (29 July – 2 August)
• Seaside week (5 – 9 August)
• Circus week (12 – 19 August)
• Reading and storytelling week (19 – 23 August)
• Dinosaur week (26 – 31 August)

Activities involve everything from butterfly counting to axe throwing, pirate painting, and fossil hunting.

Adults are welcome, and children get free grounds admission during the school holidays.

Hertfordshire – Stevenage Old Town Live (1 August)

In August, the high street of the historic town of Stevenage is being taken over by its eponymous large-scale music festival, “Stevenage Old Town Live”.

The event first took place in 2020 and has taken place every year since.

A variety of musical acts will perform all day across multiple pubs, bars, and street stages.

There are a variety of world foods on offer, as well as a children’s area to keep your younger family members entertained.

Bedfordshire – Shuttleworth Air Displays (15 and 29 August)

Bedfordshire is renowned for its rich aviation history. Shuttleworth, one of the region’s most famous airfields, is hosting several dazzling air displays throughout August that make excellent family days out.

Flying Proms Air Show, 15 August

Choreographed to music by the National Symphony Orchestra, the Flying Proms Air Show will display a variety of exciting aerobatics for you and your family to enjoy.

Previous iterations of this event have featured the Westland Lysander aircraft flying to the theme of James Bond, as well as the DH.88 Comet flying to the score from E.T.

The event will be accompanied by various food and drink vendors, and end with a spectacular fireworks finale.

Military Air Show, 29 August

Hosted every year, the Military Air Show is held in honour of the servicemen who put their lives on the line to protect our country.

The show features a thrilling display of a variety of military aircraft, including Supermarine Spitfires and Westland Lysanders. Children can also enjoy educational Discovery Zones as well as fairground games.

Buckinghamshire – Star Wars Outdoor Cinema Experience at Stowe House (19 August)

The family sci-fi classic, Star Wars, is once more coming to the big screen in Buckinghamshire this August.

The film is being shown in the stunning Anglesey Abbey, situated in the grounds of Stowe House, a grand 18th-century home steeped in history.

Released in 1977, Star Wars: A New Hope is the first film in George Lucas’s galactic film series. After Princess Leia gets abducted by Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker teams up with a Jedi Knight, smugglers, and rambunctious droids to free her and save the galaxy from the tyrannical Galactic Empire.

Underneath a sky full of stars, rewatch this classic piece of sci-fi film history with your loved ones. Make sure to bring a picnic blanket, chairs, and anything else you need to watch comfortably.

Hertfordshire – Hertfordshire Zoo: World of Dinosaurs (all month)

Located in Broxbourne, the Hertfordshire Zoo is normally home to a variety of creatures and critters, from jungle cats and birds of paradise to snakes and gibbons.

Now, it has been taken over by some of the most terrifying beasts ever to roam the Earth.

30 life-size animatronic dinosaurs have found their home in the zoo. Across the woodland trail, you’ll find Velociraptors, Brachiosaurs, T-Rexes, Stegosaurs, Triceratops, Plesiosaurs, and more.

You can even board the Rex Express to guide you through the prehistoric landscape on a gentle journey through time.

If anyone in your family is a budding palaeontologist, a trip to Hertfordshire Zoo should be on the cards this August.
