5 of the best Bedfordshire pubs to book for Father’s Day
Father’s Day is fast approaching on 15 June, and heading out for a meal is a great way to mark the occasion.
Whether you’re looking for a venue to celebrate your dad, or you’re a father yourself in search of somewhere perfect for your own family to spoil you, there is no shortage of options in our local area.
Bedfordshire is home to a range of fantastic pubs and eateries. From rustic countryside locales to more modern spots in town, you’ll find a whole host of choices to suit your tastes across the county.
Read about five great Bedfordshire pubs that could be the option you’re looking for this year.
1. The Prince of Wales, Ampthill
Located just a couple of miles away from the Caliber offices in Ampthill, the Prince of Wales is one of the best pubs in Bedfordshire – in fact, it is one of the highest-rated pubs in the county on TripAdvisor.
The menu is hugely varied, featuring pub classics, burgers, grill options, and Sunday roasts. There are also vegan and gluten-free menus, ensuring there’s something for a wide range of dietary requirements, as well as a breakfast menu if you’d prefer an earlier trip out.
Afterwards, Ampthill itself is a great location for walking off a pub meal. You could explore Ampthill Park Riverside, or even head up to Houghton House, the Grade I-listed remains of a 17th-century mansion with incredible views of the surrounding countryside.
2. The Sun Inn, Felmersham
Sitting just north of Bedford, you may never have been to the village of Felmersham, the home of the impressive Sun Inn.
You can either enjoy bar food served from 12 pm until 3 pm on Sundays, with the sample menu giving the sense of fine dining in a pub setting.
The pub also serves Sunday roasts, which you can enjoy in the bar if you can’t book a table for your desired time.
Alternatively, if you or any dads at the table are dedicated foodies, you might want to opt for the Farmers Table Menu, a set seasonal tasting menu with an incredible array of culinary options.
Make sure you book as soon as possible if the Sun Inn sounds like your kind of afternoon out, as tables for 15 June are already filling up fast.
3. The Black Horse, Woburn
A Publican Awards winner in 2022, the Black Horse in the hugely aesthetic town of Woburn advertises itself as a blend of traditional and modern, making it ideal for covering a wide range of family tastes.
The menu features classic pub grub, from pork belly and coq au vin, as well as alternative options such as their rainbow lasagne that’s suitable for vegetarians and vegans. And of course, as there should be at any proper British pub, there’s a roast available on Sundays, too.
For Father’s Day, the Black Horse is offering a two-course deal for £33, or three courses for £39, which may be good value if you’re looking for a substantial Father’s Day meal out.
4. The Saddle & Spoke, Biggleswade
The market town of Biggleswade lies just south of Bedford, and is home to the Saddle & Spoke, a cosy pub that boasts comfy sofas, soft fabrics, low light, and tasteful wall art.
The pub takes its name from the fascinating history surrounding Biggleswade and cycling – it was here that English inventor, Dan Albone, created the safety bicycle, replacing the penny-farthing and becoming the template for most bikes that you’ll see today.
There are separate menus for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and Sunday roasts, featuring a whole host of varied dishes. The pub caters brilliantly to dietary requirements, with vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options across the board.
If you can’t get everyone together for the day itself, the Saddle & Spoke also offers e-gift cards that you could give instead.
5. The Gordon Arms, Bedford
The Gordon Arms in Bedford is a brilliant blend of old-fashioned pub and contemporary restaurant, combining the best of both elements.
The pub serves a huge range of alcohol and soft drinks, but perhaps none more exciting than the Brewpoint beers, a range of lagers, IPAs, stouts, and ales, all from a local Bedford brewer.
On the food menu, you’ll find starters and sides like bao buns and loaded tater tots. But the Gordon Arms’s main appeal comes from its artisan pizzas, cooked fresh in a purpose-built pizza oven. If that isn’t enough, you can enjoy flatbreads, salads, or “big pots” such as pulled beef brisket lasagne, too.
And, if you like the idea of the pub’s overall feel but still want traditional pub food, you can enjoy a roast on Sundays from 12 pm.
Even better, if you prebook before 12 pm on Friday 13 June, each dad at the table can enjoy a free pint.
